    The development of expandable steel openhole packers has opened new horizons. The basic concept of attaching an expandable steel sheath to the outside of the casing by welding (cost effective) or crimping (high anchoring and pressure ratings without impacting the base casing characteristics) opens up a wide range of products and applications, including:

    • Improving primary cementing, a robust steel packer can be run in as part of the casing string and expanded into the wet cement to shut-off gas migration, prevent crossflow, centralize the casing, and ensure an efficient cement job

    Pressure compensation systems

    Pressure compensation sytems incorporated in certain Saltel Xpandable Steel Packers provide very high differential pressure ratings, far above anything else available in the oil and gas industry.

    As more and more successful operations are recorded, and the notion of a steel annulus packer between casing and borehole is shown to be the most effective possible, we can expect annulus barriers to become an industry standard for annulus integrity.     Isolation Packers

    Isolation Packers are annulus barriers expanded in-situ to enable zonal isolation in various applications, depending on the operator’s requirements. Xpandable Isolation Packers are crimped or welded around the completion casing. The metallic sleeves are expanded with hydraulic pressure, through an inflation port, against the formation or the casing there are installed in. The stainless steel plastic deformation creates a solid and permanent annulus seal.

    Zonal Isolation with Steel Packers: working principles

    Annulus Zonal Isolation Packers (AZIP) are slid onto the completion casing, and sealed by welding or crimping. Hydraulic pressure is applied in the completion casing, to expand the metallic sleeves through an inflation port, up to the contact with the formation or casing there are set in. The stainless steel plastic deformation creates a solid and permanent annulus seal.

     

    Zonal Isolation - Features and benefits with Saltel Packers

    Saltel Expandable Steel Annulus Zonal Isolation Packers are robust to run, set quickly, and ensure high pressure life of well seal. This is the ideal solution for annulus zonal isolation. the expandable steel zonal isolation packer seals effectively, including in oval, out-of-gauge, and irregular boreholes. It provides a cost-effective solution for the life of the well. The packer seals reliably through thermal cycling and temperature fluctuations. It minimizes cost with no special well fluid requirements for expansion, and saves time with on-demand expansion and immediate sealing.

    Annulus Zonal Isolation Packers : More details

    Saltel Zonal Isolation Packer uses proprietary expandable stainless steel technology and a patented thin layer of bonded elastomer to achieve zonal isolation during injection, production, and cementing operations. Each Zonal Isolation Packer displays specific features and performances depending on the application and the well configuration.

    Injection and production

    Saltel Zonal Isolation Packer is made up to a casing string, which is run into an open or cased hole. The lower end of the string is sealed with a plug and the internal pressure increased by pumping from surface. This pressure is transmitted to the packers’ integral stainless steel sleeve through the expansion port. The sleeve expands out into the annulus between the casing and borehole or outer casing string, conforming to the shape of the wellbore or casing and isolating the annulus below the Zonal Isolation Packer from the annulus above. Alternatively, one or more packers can be used for selective multizonal production or to prevent zonal crossflow, conduct multizonal acidizing, seal off a water zone, or perform other remedial operations.

    Off-bottom cementing

    For off-bottom cementing, the packer is again run in as part of the casing string and expanded to isolate the annulus below from the annulus above. Cement is pumped above the packer through the side ports of a stage collar or differential valve (DV) tool; the ports are closed when cementing is complete.

    Off-bottom cementing can be used, for example, to place primary cement above an uncemented completion that is subsequently subjected to high-pressure hydraulic fracturing. Saltel Zonal Isolation Packer can be set in the previous casing or in open hole. During stimulation operations, it forms a high-pressure barrier that both seals the annulus and protects the cement.

    Stage cementing

    A similar process is used for stage cementing (e.g., to bypass a thief zone or avoid formation breakdown due to high hydrostatic pressures). The first (or bottom) cement stage is pumped through the stage collar to the end of the casing and up the annulus to the calculated height. Subsequently, the Zonal Isolation Packer is expanded, the side ports of the stage collar are opened, and the second cement stage is pumped above the packer. The isolation packer forms a barrier between the two annular sections.

    Cement backup

    Set in the uncured cement sheath, Saltel Zonal Isolation Packers can be used to compartmentalize the annulus into independent parts, preventing channeling and micro annulus from spreading. The permanent expanded metal sleeves enhance the integrity of the annular seal and provide backup to the cement during the life of the well.

    Robust construction

    The packer is built on a one-piece mandrel by welding or crimping, with no hidden internal connection. Both ends are fixed and protect the expandable sleeve while running into the well. In addition to providing zonal isolation, expansion of the packer also centralizes the casing string.

    Welded Zonal Isolation Packers are available in standard materials and provide life-of-well isolation in sweet environments.

    Crimped Zonal Isolation Packers are available in both standard and customized materials, and are suitable for sour environments.

    Steel AZIP-C 1-0

    Expandable Steel Annular Zonal Isolation Packer Crimped, 1-0

     

    AZIP-C  ValveSaltel Steel AZIP-C 1-0 (and 0-1) is based on proprietary expandable stainless steel technology. It is designed to achieve zonal isolation at high pressure.
    The packer steel sleeve is expanded between the casing and the borehole by applying pressure in the casing. It conforms to the real wellbore shape. Sealing with the borehole uneven surface is achieved through a patented thin layer of bonded elastomer (associated with expandable dynamic seals for temperatures above 250 degF / 120 degC).
    The packer is built onto a one piece mandrel by crimping. This patented design keeps casing integrity and provides high sealing and anchoring of the Packer ends with the base pipe. There is no welding, no machining operation on the base casing and there is no hidden internal connection. Both ends are fixed and serve as protection to the expandable sleeve while running in hole.
    The packer features an expansion and pressure compensation valve that closes permanently the expansion port once the packer is set. The valve is activated by reaching a pre-determined pressure level. The activation pressure value can be modified by replacing shear pin that is easily accessible. The expansion valve also provides safety if the packer is expanded in front of wash-out. The valve system is fully protected during RIH.
    Once triggered, the valve simultaneously opens a fluid communication between the annulus and the packer chamber. Annulus pressure coming from the valve side is compensated inside the expanded steel packer sleeve providing high sealing capacity and excellent resistance to thermal cycling.

Sealing with the borehole uneven surface is achieved through a patented thin layer of bonded elastomer. Two seal length are available - 4ft and 8ft.

    The packer is built onto a one-piece mandrel by crimping. This patented design keeps casing integrity and provides high sealing and anchoring of the packer ends with the base pipe. There is no welding, no machining operation on the base casing and there is no hidden internal connection. Both ends are fixed and serve as protection to the expandable sleeve while running in the well.

    Saltel Steel ECP-W is based on proprietary expandable stainless steel technology. It is designed to set at low pressure and achieve zonal Isolation, one-stage cementing or off-bottom cementing in low pressure environments.

    The packer is welded onto a one-piece mandrel with no internal connection. The packer can be mounted on any carbon steel base casing in a simple and cost effective way. Both ends are fixed and serve as protection to the expandable sleeve while running in the well.

     

    The packer expansion port is equipped with a valve system naturally closed from the inside of the expandable sleeve to the casing ID. Fluid is trapped inside the packer expandable sleeve to increase the differential pressure rating and to prevent the expandable sleeve from collapsing. Valve system also provides safety if the packer is expanded in front of a wash-out. The system closes the expansion port (non-permanently) if the flow exceeds a predetermined value. Located under the expandable sleeve, the valve has a large flow area and is fully protected during RIH.

    Operating Principles

    remedial services

    Made from high quality steel or stainless steel with an elastomer outer skin with a profiled sealing system, the Expandable Steel Patch is run on tubing, drill pipe. At depth the Patch is expanded using a high pressure inflatable packer, and pushed against the casing to activate the outer seals. The setting tools are extracted to leave a pressure resistant inner lining inside the well.

    SALTEL FracPacker 10K is based on proprietary expandable stainless steel technology. The steel packer expandable sleeve is expanded between the casing and the borehole by applying pressure in the casing. Sealing is achieved through a thin layer of bonded elastomer.


    The patented pressure balanced double sleeve design allows for application of varying annular differential pressures while cycling the temperature without losing the seal.


    The welded end fittings also serve as protection to the expandable sleeve while running in the well. Rotation is possible while running in, full casing characteristics are maintained. The expanded sleeve also acts as a centralizer to the casing string once expanded.

     

    Challenges

    The steel packer expandable sleeve is expanded between the casing and the borehole by applying pressure in the casing. It conforms to the real wellbore shape. Sealing with the borehole uneven surface is achieved through a patented thin layer of bonded elastomer.
    The packer is built onto a one piece mandrel by Welding (AZIP-W) or Crimping (AZIP-C). There is no hidden internal connection. Both ends are fixed and serve as protection to the expandable sleeve while running in hole.
    Both injection and collapse pressures are held by the packer expandable sleeve resistance. The packer features a valve system that provides safety in case the packer is set in front of a wash-out, but does not trap fluid in the packer. The system closes if the flow exceeds a predetermined value to reduce any risks of fluid communication.
    Expansion of the packer simultaneously centralizes the casing inside the borehole.

    Valve Description

    Saltel AZIP 0-0 expansion port is equipped with a valve system. The valve is integrated within the casing thickness. Located under the expandable sleeve, the valve has a large flow area (42 mm²) and is fully protected during RIH.
    Valve system provides safety if the packer is expanded in front of a wash-out. In the event of sleeve failure, the system closes the expansion port (non-permanently) if the flow across the valve exceeds 28 l/min (7.4GPM).

    Saltel Steel Packer Technology

    The Expandable Steel Annular Isolation Packers are slid onto the completion casing, and sealed by welding or crimping. Hydraulic pressure is applied in the completion casing to expand the metallic sleeves up to the contact with the formation or casing it is set in. As a result, the stainless steel sleeves plastic deformation creates a solid and permanent annulus seal. Compared to existing solutions, our Annular Isolation Packers come with a drastically quicker and positive setting procedure compared to fluid-inflated packers, with more effective (high pressure) sealing features than elastomer swelling packers.
