    The packer will be thus positionned and expanded in the openhole section for a one-stage cement job, once the annulus is sealed below.

    Saltel Xpandable Steel Packers are stainless steel annulus casing barriers designed to isolate annulus sections.

    The plastic deformation of stainless steel sleeves combined with composite elastomer skin ensures an effective seal, a robust and permanent annulus barrier.

    Crimped or welded around the casing, they are permanent packers, set to seal annular gaps. Xpandable Steel packers help during and after cementing operations to guarantee a perfect annular integrity. In such cases, they can be run (sometimes in conjunction with cement stage tools) for single or multiple stage cementing, off-bottom cementing, or cement backup.

    Xpandable Steel Packers can also be used to isolate fracturing stages during openhole ball-drop multistage fracturing operations, or for long term annulus zonal isolation requirements, such as reservoir compartmentalization, acid stimulation, and plug and abandonment.

    What does open hole completion mean to us?

    Two different ways of completing the well are available at reservoir level: open hole completion or cased-hole completion. An open-hole completion is the uncemented bottom section of the well, reaching the reservoir. The well is commonly cased above the reservoir.

     

    Open hole completions are meant to reduce the drilling costs. Cementing the whole annulus involves significant costs that can be reduced thanks to the open hole completion option. Besides, perforating costs can be reduced with open hole completion alternatives such as slotted liners or sand screens.

     

    100% of Saltel Xpandable Steel Packers are designed for open hole completions. Only a few single cased-hole applications require our stainless steel well packers. In most cases, our open hole packers are run as part of the completion string to ensure open hole annulus zonal isolation, depending on the final use of the operator.

    Solution

    To ensure the integrity of an annulus the cement seal can be backed up with a steel barrier between the casing and borehole. This can be set below or above the cement. It may even be used to replace cement.

    Multiple Stage Cementing

     

    Challenge

    Low pressure zones, high loss zones, faults, or the differential pressure created by the density of cement can make annular cementing difficult.
    The challenge is to provide an alternative allowing proper cementing of the casing string with standard cement slurry (avoiding large cement losses and no return to surface).

    MULTIPLE STAGE CEMENTING
     

    Proposed solution

    Steel Packers combined with a Stage Collar or DV Tool are run as part of the casing string. The packer is positionned above the troublesome formation on a competent hole section. Once expanded, the packer provides an effective support for cement circulated through the stage collar up to the surface. Depending on the number of loss zones and length of the casing, one-stage (and more) cement jobs are achievable. The robustness of the Steel Packer reduces any risk of damage during RIH even in slimholes. Rotation of the string while running-in is allowed to ease the operation. The high expansion ratio ensures effective sealing even in washed-out boreholes.

    Casing Centralization

    Saltel Industries Expandable Steel Packers can easily be turned into Expandable Centralizers. Their compact design (short length / small RIH diameter) allows them to be run in hole even in long horizontals reducing the torque and drag. Once at depth, the Expandable Centralizers can be deployed to centralize the casing even in oval, irregular or out of gauge wellbores

    Saltel Industries Expandable Steel Packers such as ECP or AZIP product range are used to split long length of the annulus into shorter sections to improve flow control and prevent sand migration. Set with a washpipe or a straddle tool, the proprietary expandable metal technology provides effective seal even in oval, out of gauge or irregular boreholes by applying minimum stress to the formation. Using standard materials (ECP) or with a customized material selection tailored to the well conditions (AZIP), Saltel Expandable Steel packers provide a life of the well solution.

     

     

    Zonal Isolation

    The challenge

    Horizontal completions are becoming longer and more sophisticated, often through different formations.
    Different openhole completions are being used, with many types of slotted pipe or sandscreens, often combined with sophisticated ICD’s.


    To isolate “wet” zones or to segment the production zone to be able to modify the production profiles and shut-off potential water or gas breakthrough, it is essential to create an effective barrier between completion and borehole without using cement.

    The solution

    A Saltel Expandable Steel Packer can be run with the completion and expanded in-situ to make an effective and efficient seal at pre-determined intervals.
    The pressure from surface is used to inflate the packers either by pressuring up the entire string (when using Resflow check valve ICD’s), using wash pipe, or a cup tool to isolate the inflation port.

Depth, deviation, temperature, high pressure are often obstacles that cementing operations and swellable packers cannot overcome. Our Openhole Multistage shale fracturing system allows efficient and controlled stimulation operations in difficult well conditions (Up to 160 degC/320 degF). Since it is an openhole application, complex and uncertain cementing of the production casing is avoided. Once activated, the Steel Packers guarantee a perfect isolation of each zone which can be successively stimulated. Saltel Isolation Packers can also be used to isolate screens or pre-perforated casings.     Matrix acidizing requires precise flow and pressure control. Saltel Expandable Steel packers placed along the casing string to split the long length of the annulus into shorter sections will allow proper placement of the treatment.

     

    Saltel Industries Annular Zonal Isolation Packers (AZIP) simulate combined effects of temperature drop and differential pressure. Metallic and elastomeric material selection adapted to the well conditions allow for multiple acid treatments during the life of the well.

    Cement provides casing annulus seal between the reservoir, geological formations and the surface during the life of the well. Therefore, any issue encountered during the placement, curing or after several years can lead to major safety and environmental issues.
    Set in the uncured cement sheath, Saltel Expandable Steel packers compartmentalize the annulus into independent parts, preventing channeling and micro-annulus from spreading between them the curing phase.     Saltel Industries has developed different an alternative to seal off total losses zones in the annulus:

    Xpandable ECP (External Casing Packer), combined with a cement port, will be a useful and permanent annulus isolation barrier, to ensure the cement is properly set above the total losses zone.

    Saltel Expandable Packers combined with a stage collar enable cementing above troublesome formations in several stages. We have developed two product ranges specific to stage cementing and off-bottom cementing.     REMEDIAL CEMENTATION INTEGRITY
     

    In the event a squeeze job is required, the Saltel Casing patch can be used to isolate perforations after the squeeze job. Even if the squeeze job is successful in providing a cement barrier, a Saltel Patch is often used to seal off the perfs to protect the cement from the fluids and pressures of the well bore, and restore casing integrity. If a remedial squeeze job was required on a well that was going to be Frac’d, the setting of patch would be absolutely necessary to prevent the squeezed cement from being exposed to the Frac pressures.

Qualified to ISO 14310 V3 at pressures up to 15,000 psi and temperature variations between 160°C/20°C, SES-FracPackers provide a high pressure / high temperature annulus isolation.     Multistage Cementing

     

    Cementing above openhole completion (slotted casing, screens) or above troublesome formations in several stages can be achieved with Saltel Expandable Steel Packers combined with a stage collar. Two product ranges specific to stage cementing and off-bottom cementing have been developed whether the packer is to be used either as base for the cement (Steel ECP) or as long term annulus seal (Steel AZIP). Steel ECP have been designed to operate at low pressure with standard casing weights and materials whereas the AZIP has a large material selection.

     

     

    Completion Repair
