Operations
Saltel Industries is proficient in the full product cycle, starting with an evaluation of clients’ requirements, the conception and design of a suitable solution, and manufacturing the appropriate parts, through to applying the solution in the field. (See “Development Process” for more details)
The principle for setting Saltel Expandables is quite simple. On a typical job a Down Hole Expansion Tool (DHET) is connected with an inflatable packer element and slid into an expandable stainless steel Patch.
These are picked up together and run in hole to the setting depth on tubing or drill pipe.Pressure is applied from surface to inflate the packer and stretch the steel, pushing it against the inside of the casing or borehole. The surface pressure is then bled-off, the packer deflates, run-in just below the expanded section, and re-inflated to expand the following section. This is repeated as often as necessary until the entire Patch is fully expanded.
A typical setting process for a perforation shut-off is shown below.
Progressive Expansion of a Saltel Stainless Steel Patch.
An elastomer outer skin is used to ensure a good seal between the body of the patch and the inside of the casing.
The hydrogenated nitrile (HNBR) selected gives a good ageing performance in the aggressive environments encountered down hole.
A machined sealing profile has been designed which will be energized by the setting pressure, and maintain a good seal with both internal (burst) and external (collapse) pressure differentials.
The setting process means the Patch can be manufactured with a tapered entry cone machined into the steel top and bottom, to facilitate the future passage of tools.
The setting of SI expandable products needs to be carried out by trained personnel. Skilled Saltel engineers are available based in:
- Edmonton, Alberta, for operations in Canada
- Rennes, France, for operations in Europe
- Midland*, Texas, for operations in the USA
Strategic partnerships have been organized with oilfield service companies in other countries to train local staff to be fully proficient in job preparation and setting Saltel Expandables, please check on the world map for the most appropriate location near you.
A flying squad of specialists, based in the Saltel Industries head office in France, is also available to travel to other areas at short notice.
* Opening July 2011
